“You smiled”
“I did not”
“Yes you did. You
smiled with your eyes. You have this
little twitch. You’re doing it now”
“I am not.”
“I can see your eyes.
I saw them at the academy. They
all thought you were cold as ice. I know
different”
She exhaled deeply,
“The academy was… pleasant. And somewhat fortuitous timing for me. But we both have our duties, Captain.”
“Of course, Commander.
I wouldn’t suggest otherwise, least of all that we …you know”
She nodded her agreement.
“All the same, it’s good to know I have you as my science
officer. I wouldn’t want anyone else”
“There are many more qualified than I” she said.
“But none of them have that smile of yours”, he said. Suddenly, his communicator beeped, and
bidding a quick farewell, he was gone.
She had noted the boyish grin he still had, despite his
graying hair. Humans could be so illogical
at times. Philips was an excellent Captain, though he did have a tendency for
emotion at times. For a moment, she cast her mind back to their
time on earth together. It had indeed
been pleasant. The young cadets had been
companions, despite a somewhat rocky start to their friendship. Friendship.
That was not entirely the correct word, she chided herself. But it would have to do. Exhaling deeply and straightening her
uniform, she went about her duties.
